An ambient display using a NASA API

NASA’s Curiosity Rover launched November 26, 2011 and landed on Mars, 570 million km away, August 6 2012. It’s the largest and most capable rover ever sent to Mars. The 970kg rover is is constantly taking photos of it’s surroundings, interesting rocks or martian soil with it’s 6 cameras and sends back raw images with lots of data. These photos and data can be accessed using NASA JPL’s API.

As a 2 week screen interaction project I made a demo for a ambient display for old unused devices. The latest Mars photos slowly fade in the background while displaying available information from the mission like number of SOLs (mars days since landing), earth date and camera info.
